IOHE Mission in Colombia: Key Meetings and a new COLAM Headquarters
Medellín /Bogota/Cartegena, Colombia 06-08/09/2017.- The Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) has strengthened its institutional ties with the Asociación Colombiana de Universidades (ASCUN), Colombia Challenge your Knowledge (CCYK), Ruta N, RCI Nodo Occidente and Nodo Caribe, and Colciencias – all of which are important entities in the areas of science and technology education and development in Colombia.
The Executive Director of IOHE, Dr. David Julien, visited Colombia September 5 to 8 2017 accompanied by a delegation from the Université du Québec (UQ) network led by the Vice-President of teaching and research, Dr. Lyne Sauvageau alongside representatives from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR) and Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). During the first stage of their mission, they travelled to the Colombian capital to meet with the directors of ASCUN and held a session during which opportunities for collaboration between IOHE, the UQ network, and higher education institutions in Colombia led by IOHE’s regional Vice-President for Colombia, German Anzola president of the Universidad de Ciencias Aplicadas y Ambientales (UDCA) were introduced. In addition to this, the group held a further meeting with government representatives from Colciencias.
Following this, the IOHE and UQ network delegation travelled to Medellín where the two parties signed an agreement with the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia (UCC). For IOHE, the agreement confirmed the institutionalization of the headquarters executive direction of its College of the Americas (COLAM) program, which will be located in the university’s new facilities in the state capital of Antioquia. UCC is currently present in 18 Colombian cities and has been an active member of IOHE since 1992.
“We are very pleased with the inauguration of the new headquarters, a fact that strengthens our collaboration with UCC, and which also extends the scope of COLAM’s work in Medellín”, mentioned Dr. Julien.
Additionally, though the agency of COLAM, IOHE signed an agreement of collaboration with the Corporación Ruta N Medellín: Centro de Innovación y Negocios for the purpose of developing joint initiatives and projects concerning questions related to science, technology, and innovation education. The agreement includes the creation of internships through the Inter-American Training Program for Innovative Environment Managers (PIFGAI), collaboration on the development of the International Conference on Knowledge and Innovation (ciKi-2018) (which will take place in Guadalajara, Mexico), as well as support for the development of the Iberoamerican Network of Social Innovation Centers and Laboratories (REDICIS).
Dr. Julien also participated in a meeting at the headquarters of CCYK and RCI Nodo Occidente, during which he presented about IOHE and the Conference of the Americas on International Education (CAIE) (whose Executive Secretariat is located at IOHE and the UQ network) in the context of expressed interest for collaboration with institutions in South American countries. The final stage of the visit consisted of meetings for the same purpose with RCI Nodo Caribe at UTadeo as well as bilateral meetings with Universidad de Cartagena.
