IOHE Participates in the Universidad 2018 Conference

Havana, Cuba, 02/16/2018.- The Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE) took part in the Universidad 2018 Conference, which took place February 12th to 16th in Havana, Cuba.

IOHE’s Executive Director Dr. David Julien and Dr. Leticia Jiménez, Executive Director of the Institute for University Leadership and Management (IGLU), played an active role in a number of the event’s key activities during which they analyzed, reflected, and engaged with over 3,000 participants including global leaders in international education, intellectuals, academics, and students from 60 countries.

The Conference took place at the Havana Conference Centre as well as number of other locations. During this event, Dr. Julien took part in a panel with the executive directors of the Consejo Universitario Iberoamericano (CUIB), the Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo (AUGM), and the Unión de Universidades de América Latina y el Caribe (UDUAL) in which the plans of these international university organizations were discussed. Later, Dr. Julien spoke at another panel with the Executive Director of IGLU-IOHE where discussions focused the challenges faced by Universities in the Americas for promoting sustainable and inclusive development by 2030, with a special focus on post-graduate opportunities at the Inter-American level.

“In addition to having the opportunity to attend the outstanding presentations on issues of great interest to IOHE, the Universidad 2018 conference enabled us to strengthen our excellent collaborative relationship with Cuba’s Minister of Higher Education and Cuban universities, and helped us to prepare for CRES-2018 with other key actors present at the event,” highlighted IOHE’s Executive Director.

In addition to this, the coordinators of IGLU’s various centres throughout the continent, led by Dr. Jiménez and accompanied by Dr. Julien, gathered at the University of Havana’s facilities for a strategic planning exercise regarding the program and discussed the various IGLU events scheduled for this year. This gathering served to encourage IGLU’s Coordinators to work collaboratively for the renewal and strengthening of one of IOHE’s flagship programs.

During these two working days important questions were addressed to ensure the quality of service provided to the over 300 members of IOHE; procedures were revised, operational methods approved, objectives reaffirmed, and agreements were reached concerning the processing of information, communication, and transparency. The overarching goal of IGLU’s coordination team is the contribution of all its members to update its courses for the overall renewal of the program so that it may continue to offer quality training and professional development to directors of higher education institutions.
